Planning healthy, quick and easy meals is easier than you might think. You can eat foods you already enjoy. You don’t need any special foods or skills — no label reading or counting.
Many people have heard false information about how to eat when you have diabetes but you can plan easy meals you already love.
Here are some common misconceptions about nutrition for diabetes:
- You shouldn’t eat anything white-no bread, potatoes, pasta and rice.
- You have to make a separate meal and can’t eat what the rest of your family is eating.
- You should just eat vegetables and meat.
- You should not have any sugar, carbohydrate, or fried foods.
- You need to go on a rigid diet and avoid foods you like. Your doctor might have said
- If it tastes good, spit it out”.
- You can eat as much meat and nuts as you want.
None of these are true! If I thought this is what I had to do, I would cry. It would be too hard and take a lot of pleasure out of eating.
However, I’m sure I would try it for my health. So many people try hard to eat right. Often they are wrong about what is right.
Here are the facts:
Nutrition is a science. There is no scientific evidence that the color white makes foods unhealthy. It is not true that if a food tastes good, it is not healthy. That’s crazy talk!
- Healthy eating is good for you and everyone you love. Having nutritious food available benefits the whole family.
- You should eat a wide variety of foods, but not too much. The more variety of fruits, vegetables, and other food groups, the better chance you ‘ll get all the nutrients you need to be full of energy and feel good.
- If you are trying to lose weight, look for ways to cut calories from sugar and fat that are added to food. Portions size matters. Even if a food is healthy, you should not eat too much.
