3 Easy Steps to Get the Fiber You Need in Your Diet

September 13, 2018 By Marcia Pell Leave a Comment

Only 4% of Americans are getting enough fiber in their diet. This statistic is shocking!

However, 75% of us say we are trying to get that amount. We know we need fiber, but we think we are getting more than our actual total. I want to help you achieve your goal of getting the fiber you need.

First we’ll identify the benefits of fiber, then we’ll recognize the barriers to getting enough, and finally we’ll discuss the sources that you can tap to get you where you want to be.

The Health Benefits of Fiber

  • aids in maintaining a healthy weight
  • lowers cholesterol
  • helps manage blood sugar
  • lowers the risk of diabetes and heart disease
  • aids in digestion
  • helps maintain bowel health

Here are some great foods to help you get more fiber in your diet, click to download this handy list, “Sources of Fiber in Foods”. I’ve added the total carbohydrate grams for those who need to count their carbs.

3 Tips to Getting More Fiber in Your Diet

1. Start your day with high fiber cereal
2. Add more fruits and vegetables to meals and snacks
3. Make a grain bowl and add beans, peas and lentils

Choose high fiber foods for meals and snacks and aim for 25-35grams a day. If this is a big jump for you, add your additional fiber gradually. This will help your body adjust without bloating and discomfort. Bon appetit!
